Let’s slow down for a moment.
There’s so much we need to talk about.
About crisis and economy.
About government… and rage… and a country paralyzed by division.
About last year… and this year… and our future together.
And we’ll get to all of that in due time. But before we go all “big picture,” I want to take a moment to remember why we started this whole crazy project in the first place.
Money & Crisis is here to spotlight problems in our economy and society…
To forecast and help you prepare for crisis…
But more than anything, we built Money & Crisis from the ground up with the express purpose of helping you with your problems.
So, to kick off the new year, I want to hear from you.
Tell me about your 2018. What were your successes? Your failures?
What personal or financial crisis did you face last year? Did you kick its butt? Or are you still grappling with your problems?
What are your hopes for the future?
What are you afraid of?
Shoot me a quick email and tell me all about it.
As many of our regular emailers already know by now, I can’t answer every email individually. But I do read every single email. And I will be addressing your problems, right here in the pages of Money & Crisis.
Remember: this is as much your e-letter as it is mine.
You can read it for pure entertainment… use it as a tool to leverage a little financial security… or tap it to solve your very own personal crises.
It’s up to you.
The Leaky Bucket
Well, that was a heck of a way to ring in the New Year, folks.
The government is out to lunch.
Stocks are in the toilet.
And the roof is leaking again.
That’s not a metaphor. I’m writing this issue in my kitchen, “serenaded” by the steady plop of water dripping into a half-full bucket.
I know that’s more my crisis than anything you need to be worried about right now. But in the spirit of sharing our stories of personal crisis, I’d thought I’d give you a little peek into my world right now.
If previous repairs are any indication, this will be more expensive than I’d like it to be. But I’m not worried.
My emergency fund is more than equipped to handle an expense like this, and a few more besides.
I’d rather not pay through the nose for, what is essentially, a simple patch job. But it’s always gratifying to see the emergency fund in action.
That’s why I prepare. That’s why we prepare.
In the same vein, I ain’t worried about this whole stock market kerfuffle.
Sure it’s tanking. Just like we’ve been saying it would all year.
Despite a last-minute surge in the last week of December, 2018 will go down in history as the worst year for stocks since the housing crisis… and the worst December since the Great Depression.
It was inevitable. Like I always say, the market is cyclical.
Expansion is always followed by recession, is always followed by expansion, is always followed by recession… you get the point.
And we’ve been in economic expansion for almost a decade now. You didn’t need a M.S. in Economics to see what was coming.
The Bear Awakes
It could have hit six months ago. Or a year from now. It doesn’t matter because we have been preparing for it.
Could we be more prepared? Sure. You can always be more prepared.
But if you’ve been following the strategies outlined in Money & Crisis, you’re going to be a heck of a lot better off than the folks who did nothing.
That’s the real beauty of preparing for a crisis.
Some folks seem to think it’s a life of doom and gloom, misery and worry. But in my experience, it’s far less worrisome than the alternative.
This week, we’re going to do a deep dive on this developing crisis and answer the BIG question on everybody’s lips: “Is this going to be a recession?”
All the best,
Owen Sullivan
